National Adoption Day Reaches All 50 States to Finalize More Than 3,300 Adoptions From Foster Care

Hundreds of courts in all 50 states opened their doors on November 20, 2006 to finalize adoptions of children from foster care and to celebrate all families that adopt. More than 3,300 children were adopted into permanent families as a result of National Adoption Day celebrations in more than 250 communities nationwide. The Freddie Mac Foundation is a founding sponsor of National Adoption Day.

Major Grants Meet Needs of MD's Growing Hispanic Population

Freddie Mac Foundation grants totaling $1.5 million will help CentroNía and the Latin American Youth Center expand their services into suburban Maryland. Both organizations are responding to needs created by changing demographics in Prince George's and Montgomery Counties.

St. Coletta Celebrates Grand Opening of New Facility

The Freddie Mac Foundation, along with DC City Councilman Adrian Fenty and former DC City Administrator Robert Bobb, recently helped celebrate the grand opening of St. Coletta of Greater Washington, a new state-of-the-art, Special Education Public Charter School in Southeast DC. The Foundation provided a $1 million grant to support the new facility.

Major Grant Bridges Gap between DC Families and Needed Services

A Freddie Mac Foundation grant to Enterprise Community Partners will strengthen families in the nation's capital by helping low-income families achieve self-sufficiency. Enterprise is researching how affordable housing, access to training, after-school programs, and other social services can help families move out of poverty.

Grant to Stabilize Lives of 200 Local Homeless Children

Community of Hope (COH), an area nonprofit working to improve the health and quality of life for low-income, homeless, and underserved families, will expand its services to help an additional 100 homeless families and approximately 200 children to receive shelter and other stabilizing services. The new COH transitional housing projects are made possible through a $500,000 grant from the Freddie Mac Foundation.

Foundations and Members of Congress Join Forces to Send Care Packages to Former Foster Youth

The Foundation joined members of Congress from both parties, corporate and non-profit leaders, former foster youth, and volunteers from high-profile national organizations at the Orphan Foundation of America’s annual National Care Package Program kickoff event. The gathering celebrated the determination and success of youth who have aged out of the foster care system and are on the difficult road to college, by sending care packages to more than 7,500 former foster youth.

Heart Gallery Keeps on Moving

The Freddie Mac Foundation Heart Gallery continues to move around the region in an effort to educate and inspire people as well as find adoptive homes for foster children. This traveling exhibit features compelling portraits of children in foster care who are waiting to be adopted. A few of the half million that form the picture of foster care in this country; the 50 children featured in our gallery are from Washington, D.C. region. Secretary Jackson recently welcomed the Heart Gallery to the Department for Housing and Urban Development.

Freddie Mac and Foundation Grantees Discuss How Families Are Coping One Year After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita

Freddie Mac and the Freddie Mac Foundation hosted a teleconference with five grantees who assisted in last year’s hurricane recovery efforts to explore how Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have impacted children and families. Led by Ralph F. Boyd, Jr., executive vice president of Freddie Mac and chairman of the Freddie Mac Foundation, the conference provided an opportunity to share insights, experiences and lessons learned and to discuss what children and families faced a year ago and how hurricane victims are faring today.

Grant Enables Doorways to Serve More Arlington Homeless

Doorways for Women and Children (formerly The Arlington Community Temporary Shelter, TACTs) announced plans to tear down and rebuild its emergency shelter serving Arlington County homeless women and families, made possible in part by a $500,000 grant from the Freddie Mac Foundation. The new "Freddie Mac Foundation Family Shelte" will be larger and better equipped to provide more homeless families with safe housing and intensive support services to prepare them for self-sufficient living.

Foundation Joins Governor Kaine to Promote Smart Beginnings for Virginia's Children

The Freddie Mac Foundation recently joined Governor Timothy M. Kaine to launch the Smart Beginnings initiative, directing new and improved resources to families with children from birth to age five. During the kick-off event, an updated version of the New Parent Tool Kit, a resource sponsored by the Foundation, was distributed to new parents in attendance.

Of this, nearly $22.1 million went to make a difference in the Washington, DC region. Freddie Mac also ranked in the top 10 for our in-kind volunteer hours, with employee volunteers donating 12,904 hours to good causes.

Foundation Joins Mayor in Proclaiming Foster Care Month in the District of Columbia

The Freddie Mac Foundation joined DC officials, foster parents and social workers to honor the work done by foster parents and proclaim May Foster Care Month.  On behalf of Mayor Anthony A. Williams, Child and Family Services Agency Interim Director Uma Ahluwalia proclaimed Foster Care Month in the District of Columbia. The city also accepted a $100,000 grant from the Freddie Mac Foundation that will allow the D.C. Child and Family Services Agency to recruit, train, and support more foster parents.

Foundation Kicks-Off National Child Abuse Prevention Month, Honors Child Advocates

As a kick-off for April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Freddie Mac Foundation recently joined Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) of Northern Virginia and the Allies in Prevention Coalition, for the 4th Annual Allies in Prevention Awards Luncheon. The event honored six individuals in Northern Virginia who go above and beyond in their efforts to protect children and prevent abuse and neglect.

Foundation Hosts Summit on Homelessness

The Freddie Mac Foundation, together with Freddie Mac, recently hosted and sponsored Fairfax County's Community Summit to End Homelessness. This event brought together the public sector, business, philanthropic, nonprofit and faith communities to learn about homelessness in Fairfax County, share their experiences and contribute to a community plan to end homelessness within 10 years.

The Freddie Mac Foundation has granted $1.5 million to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (BGCGW). This unprecedented award is the largest grant ever received in the 120-year history of BGCGW – nearly doubling the amount of monetary support given by the Freddie Mac Foundation to BGCGW in the past two years.

Foundation, Freddie Mac Volunteers Send Valentine's Day Care Packages to 'Orphans'

More than 325 Freddie Mac volunteers recently prepared Valentine's Day "care packages" for 2,500 college students who had aged out of foster care. The event – hosted by Freddie Mac at the company's headquarters in McLean, VA and underwritten by the Freddie Mac Foundation – was designed by the Orphan Foundation of America (OFA) to draw attention to and meet the needs of thousands of young people who leave foster care without any emotional or financial support.

More Than $14 Million in Programs Improve the Lives of Children and Families in 2nd Half '05

In the second half of 2005, the Freddie Mac Foundation continued to strengthen communities by giving more than $14 million in awards to organizations whose innovative programs help improve the lives of children and families, primarily in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Of this, the Foundation addressed extraordinary needs created by Hurricane Katrina by granting more than $4 million to organizations helping victims of the natural disaster.

Grant Provides Academic Enrichment to Disadvantaged Youth in DC

The Freddie Mac Foundation has awarded Higher Achievement Program, Inc. a $500,000 grant to help expand its after school academic enrichment program to reach 300 economically disadvantaged youth at its four Achievement Centers throughout the District of Columbia. The grant will also enable Higher Achievement to open a new Achievement Center that will serve 60 more children.
