Freddie Mac and J.C. Nalle Community School Partnership

Started in October 1992, today the partnership encompasses students, parents, school staff, a nonprofit service provider and Freddie Mac employee volunteers. This comprehensive program sponsored by Freddie Mac and the Freddie Mac Foundation supports a variety of programs and activities for students living in Southeast Washington, D.C.

The Freddie Mac Foundation adds a critical dimension to the relationship by committing more than $7 million to help transform J.C. Nalle into a full-service Community School that offers a full-range of services for children and families. Learn more about this aspect of the partnership: J.C. Nalle Community School Partnership.

Freddie Mac Home Team Volunteer Program Component

More than 200 Freddie Mac employees volunteer with the students of J.C. Nalle each year.

The Freddie Mac Buddy Program brings dozens of Freddie Mac Home Team volunteers together one Saturday a month to visit and work with J.C. Nalle students. Workshops, field trips and buddy talks provide opportunities to build and heighten knowledge and most importantly, bring students and adults together to enrich each other's lives.

The Pen Pal Program is a strategic way for students to strengthen writing and reading skills while building relationships. Freddie Mac Home Team volunteers serve as pen pals to all 2nd grade students at J.C. Nalle.

The Tutoring Program is another opportunity for Home Team volunteers to support J.C. Nalle students. Tutoring sessions focus on oral reading fluency and basic math, and tutors are supported by materials aligned with the school's curriculum.

The Public Speaking Program offers students a chance to develop their public speaking skills; build confidence in their presentation style; and improve their ability to communicate effectively. Home Team volunteers serve as coaches and each session culminates with a public speaking contest.

Other Special Programs

Freddie Mac and Freddie Mac Foundation's involvement in J.C. Nalle also includes a variety of other activities such as visits to the school by Maya Angelou and sponsorship of the Levine School of Music and Imagination Stage Programs. We have also provided back-to-school supplies, held beautification days and winter celebrations, and sponsored year-end awards programs.

Created by Freddie Mac in 1991, the Freddie Mac Foundation is dedicated to making home a place where children and their families thrive. As the largest corporate funder in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, Freddie Mac and the Freddie Mac Foundation have invested more than $348 million in organizations serving the community.
